Following along the path they embarked on with 2007’s 23, for Penny Sparkle Blonde Redhead push their dream-pop further into electronic territory. Dropping the intricate guitar work they’ve often been known for in favor of sparse beats and ambient sounds, Penny Sparkle surely isn’t their most instantly loveable album, but Kazu Makino’s vocals, an alternate-universe Bjork, still drag you into the band’s ethereal sonic dreamscape, and that’s a pretty great place to be.
