designer q+a | Laura O’dell | Porridge for Anthropologie Chemise

words_dena rochelle

Anthro has this summery frock filed in their sleepwear + lounge department. But as the catalog shot so aptly conveys, this pretty chemise is beach worthy and could easily double as a dress. Here’s what LA-based designer Laura O’dell has to say about her latest design:

Dena ~ This chemise looks pretty enough to wear as a maxi dress… Would you dare?

Laura ~ “Absolutely. It’s amazing paired with long bohemian necklaces, bangles and strappy sandals. It’s a bit sheer, so it’s also great layered with other slip dresses or thrown over a swimsuit for a day at the beach.”

Dena ~ What inspired this design?

Laura ~ “I love maxis in the summer and anything that is even remotely inspired by the 1970′s so this shape works great for a gal like me.  The lobsters and subtle gold color are reminiscent of Cape Cod, Montauk and Nantucket so it adds a wonderful preppy element to a comfortable bohemian basic.”

Dena ~ How long have you been working with Anthro?

Laura ~ “I’ve been working with Anthropologie since the first collection I shipped back in ’05. So I guess it’s been 6 years now.”

Dena ~  Are you still doing the full Porridge line or just the Anthro collex?

Laura ~ “I haven’t done a full collection or trade show since ’08 and I love being able to focus on special projects for Anthropologie and a small handful of private-label companies. I’m sure one day I’ll go back to selling to specialty stores but for now I love staying focused.”

Dena ~ What other things are you working on for Anthro?

Laura ~ “Lot’s of fabulous new projects are in the works including a few maxi skirts, a great corset dress, summer tanks and home goods, including new curtains and aprons.”

Dena ~ Anything exciting in the works for fall?

Laura ~ “Lots and Lots but it’s all a secret!”
