Every time I watch Mad Men, I always marvel at how amazing the ladies’ hair looks. You know those pin curls and updos are not DIY and required many a day in the stylist’s chair, which in 2011, is incomprehensible. Regardless, I always imagine how glamorous it would it be to show up at my daughter’s preschool with perfect hair just like Betty. So when I got a chance to experience the Draper treatment at Drybar (L.A.’s original blow dry bar), I jumped at it!
Drybar, which is already a sensation in California, focuses on one thing: really fabulous blowouts. And lucky for us Arizona girls, they just opened a great new location in the oh-so-happening Scottsdale Quarter. The space is modern, bright, and glamorous, and it’s also intimate enough that you don’t feel lost in the shuffle.
The location’s owner and operating partner, Amy Ross, is a former executive at Estee Lauder, so she understands the beauty needs of women today. But more than that, she’s very friendly with an infectious energy and a true appreciation of her customers, which comes through in every aspect of the service. When I walked in, I was immediately offered a glass of champagne, which I happily accepted even though it was only 10 a.m. Talk about rolling like Betty Draper. From there, I was whisked off to enjoy a Floater, which is a dreamy 10-minute head massage that seemed to be over before it began.
Drybar features a cocktail-inspired menu of different styles from tousled to sleek. I let my stylist choose, and she opted for the Straight Up. While she worked her magic with her round brush and hair dryer, I sipped my champs and watched Carrie and Co. on the big screen. Before I knew it, my short bob had a sassy new swing, and I was ready to head to preschool with movie star hair.
The best part: these great blowouts are a sublime indulgence, but not a bank-breaker. For $35, we all can sport some pretty fabulous hair a lot more frequently. But be sure to make an appointment; the word is getting out, and they’re booking up quickly.
